Dusted her off and brought her out for and early spring fill-up and beer run.
Recent additions last year were a new dash pad, fuel tank and LED headlights. Also sorted out some electrical gremlins.

Ah!
The dash PAD............
I plan on recovering mine.
I did my Vanagon dash and it came out great!
Expanding foam (low rate) and Gorilla Glue are my friends. Actually Girilla Glue seems to be the same basic formulation as Expanding Foam.
I rebuilt my dash pad base, got a quart of High temperature Contact cement designed for air craft interiors (makes normal contact cement seem like garbage) and using a heat gun over laid vinyl.
Yes, it took awhile but well worth the investment. Dave |
We are on to the same tricks. 🙂 If you coat an area with gorilla glue and mist it with water it expands and fills nicely. You can then sand it down with ease. And I recently got turned on to high temp contact cement repairing things that routinely go through an autoclave _________________ 71 vert build. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=572951&highlight=dead |

Wow Kman!!
I hadn't seen this thread before, very good work, very inspiring.
I like your "can do" attitude!
What is wrong with the dash? I see you welded it and painted it. I plan to do likewise but if there is a blunder that I can avoid........
Need something? Well just make it!
Is it broken? Well just Fix it!
On the bad photo links, because of a finite editing window, if you let me know what photos go where I can pull out the photobucket links and put in the proper thesamba links.

Thanks. I was able to find and replace all of the ghia related info (mostly pages 2-4) so I consider this thread fixed. I like how the dash came out. It was one of the easier things to to do. Plastic wood doesn't do it for me. I need to take off the dashpad at some point and redo that. I think I can do a much better job now. _________________ 71 vert build. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=572951&highlight=dead |

My thread has gone to the photobucket dogs. The Samba pic loading didn't work for a couple sessions and I had to resort to photobucket a couple times. I hope to fix this in the near future.
Meanwhile, I've been able to drive it to work on occasion now that the salt has been washed off the road.

Thanks Scotty. I missed this compliment when you posted it but I sure appreciate it.
Got a little rain at the VW show in Ypsilanti today. It made the drive with ease.

Being a relatively new member here, every once in a while I stumble upon one of these build threads, and binge-read it in a about an hour, in this case following a ton of work from October 2013 to now.
In every case I am astounded at the work and skill that goes into each restoration.
One of the many things I've always wanted to do is learn to weld and metalwork.
That being said, my within-the-last-few-months-purchased '63 bug is in very good shape, with a little decrepitness here and there (nothing dangerous), and I want to learn to weld and do the repairs myself before I am too old to know which way is up.
This thread, as well as others like it, is such an inspiration. Congrats on a job well very well done and thanks for sharing your journey! |

A bad ground should not cause a fuse to blow. Likely a short in the positive lead. I would check first at the fuse block to make sure your wires are secure and nothing is touching.
Next try a continuity check from the fuse block to the headlight.
After that make sure all is good with the sockets for the running lights. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |
