I've had this 71 Vert sitting around for 7 or 8 years. I came to the conclusion a few years ago that it was a lost cause, but circumstances lately have found me with more time than money. That means fixing what's there, only replacing what is absolutely necessary, and making what I can.

So far so good. At least I have the tools to make it happen. I am going to get a lot of practice in metalforming. I should be an expert by the time I'm done.

Looks great so far!

Keep up the good work.

Nice start!

It can only get better. I pieced together different floorpans until I had metal all the way around. Made me wish I had the $400 for new ones. I fixed up and put adjusters on a used beam. The one from this car was a gonner.

Wow, that looks scary. And I fret about the little spot behind my headlight that needs cutting out....

that shit will buff out
nice work on the pan and running gear, keep it up.

Put on a brake reservoir and filled it. Brakes work. Mounted transmission and put in a new plastic clip on the shift rod. Goes into all gears. Replacing heat adjustment cables. Repacked axles and gave good boots. Mocking up engine and mounted. Going to test its condition and then fix up all its pieces.

Backstory- This was an autostick but I never got the transmission or engine for it. Many parts of this build are off a manual coupe which was just as rusty but didn't have a title. What it did have was a working tranny and engine. So this car it being built with the best off of both cars and new bits as needed.

Hopefully I can drive the chassis around when I can get back to it in a couple of weeks.

I wired it up to start yesterday and installed a seat and steering wheel. The good news: I got it to start and run enough to back it out. The bad news is that it seems to be only running on two cylinders at the moment.

I will probably have to move on to some serious bodywork before I sort this engine out. I will likely have to rebuild it. It's pretty gummy inside. I'm not the best with engines so this will be a challenge.

I was hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I got something in the middle.

You're not alone.

My marriage worked out about the same as well.

I guess we're opposites; body work scares me, but engine work is almost second nature. How far away from Novi Michigan are you? If not too far, I'd be glad to take a look at the externals and see how your compression and valves are...

If not, then I'd recommend an oil change, valve adjustment, ignition check, and compression check.

Thanks for the offer. I can do some of the basics. I'll mess around a little bit next week and report. I'm just 44 miles away from Novi according to google maps. Chelsea.

I am testing a second engine that may be in better shape. It has an alternator instead of a generator. Do I have to buy the external voltage regulator below that goes with the alternator or can I use the old one that goes with the generator for testing purposes. I am unable to get spark.

Some alternators have internal regulators, one below is internal. The older ones are external, not sure if the reg is the same.

Yes. I have the alternator that is external. I need to know if I can use the external regulator that worked for the generator for the alternator also. I'm guessing not as voltmeter readings aren't looking good.

c21darrel Tue Nov 26, 2013 3:14 pm

They are different. Dont use the generator reg. I just learned why it is desireable to get the internally regulated alternator...ouch.
I payed less for my Bosch L82X Alt. Maybe a less expensive regulator out there...i dint know.

It always looks worse before it gets better.

Removing paint and doing some body work. I wasn't able to sandblast underneath before it got cold and wet, so I'm going to work around that and blast it later.

Relief cuts to help the decklid fit better

Some front end metal work. I plan on eliminating the 71 square turn signals and put in 69 bullet turn signals that I have. Don't hate.

Making Parts. A little more time spent on the parts you see. A LOT more of this to do.

kman Tue Dec 24, 2013 1:05 pm

Making more parts. I decided it made more sense to go from the outside in so I can make sure everything fits as I go.

You can see I have a lot to go by.

Some of the process toward a finished part (NO, it's not done yet)

You're doing great work, mate. Keep going and have a merry Christmas and a happy Ghia New Year. I'm learning from you, so keep the posts coming. I agree with you on the corner flasher lights. They look much better in the old style.
