The body is almost ready for paint and the painter should be painting the underside and interior soon. The doors, hood and decklid are done.
The engine build is still moving forward. Unfortunately, my set of NOS KS pistons included one 40hp piston so I couldnât use them. I found another set of NOS KS pistons and was hoping to use them with the OG set of cylinders I had honed, but the first set of pistons were over sized so I had to find another set of OG cylinders. I thought I had all the correct parts for the engine and told the builder that it would be a quick and easy rebuild. Sure glad Iâm not the one putting it together. Hopefully he will get the long block done and I can fit all the sheet metal, get it painted and back together. |

Well, the year is starting off with some great progress on the Ghia.
Today I went to the painterâs to lay some undercoating down in the fender wells. I really like the look of fresh paint, but in the end I decided to undercoat them. I really want to drive this car and I donât want to have to worry about rock chips in the wells and I think it will add an extra layer of protection. The painter had me spray the undercoating to make sure it was done just the way I wanted it. I wonder if he thinks Iâm picky or something : ) I decided to be a little bit more conservative in the application of the undercoating than the factory and keep it isolated to just the wheel wells. I also went back and forth about coating the mud plates, especially since they looked so good in paint, but in the end I undercoated them just like the factory did. I though it would look weird to have the wells coated and not the mud plates. I feel that coating them makes for a more consistent finish.
Now that the undercoating is done all that is left is to paint the exterior, cut and buff.
I also got a text that my long block is done. I hope I can pick it up next weekend and start installing the tins, heater boxes, fan shroud, etc. Once all of that is installed and fits correctly I can tear it all down and get it painted. Once everything is painted I can assemble it for the final time, take it back to the engine builder and get him to break it in and tune the carburetors.

After 25 years of ownership the Ghia is finally painted! What a long journey to get it this far.

Thank you all for the kind words. The Samba has helped me keep on track with this project over the past 25 years and so many here have provided inspiration and motivation, so I'm glad to return the favor.
Hopefully I will be able to reunite the body and chassis next month and bring the Ghia home. Updates should be more timely once it's back in my hands. After all these years of restoring, making and finding parts it will be nice to see them all come together. |

Proud of you, Loren! Itâs taken a little while though⦠Kudos for your perseverance and scholarly approach. I truly hope that you will drive and profoundly enjoy the finished product someday soon. Roadtrip to visit Johnny and I? Iâll buy the first round! _________________ David Ruby
